Enrollment FAQ

Who can enroll in a charter school?

Charter Schools can enroll any student living in the state of North Carolina who is entitled to a free public education. Charter schools are schools of choice, parents and students choose which school they would like to attend and are limited by space availability for each grade.

Do you have to pay to go to a charter school?

The answer is no. Charter schools, like all public schools, are tuition-free. Like public schools, charter schools are publicly funded by local, state, and federal tax dollars similar to district or traditional schools.

What is the difference between charter schools and public schools?

The difference between charter schools and public schools in terms of flexibility is, charter schools are run by a private board and public schools are run by the state board of education. Charter schools might be autonomous, but they are required to run based on their charter. North Carolina Charter schools must hold to the same academic accountability measures as traditional North Carolina public schools.

Why are there waitlists for charter schools?

Charter schools only have a certain number of spots per grade. Typically, with a successful school, there are more students applying than there are spots available.

When is the Application Period?

The application period begins October 1st through September 30th.

What is the preference order for the lottery?

In the following sequence, a lottery will be held for full-time staff members’ children, and siblings of current enrolled students. It will be held at each grade level to establish the acceptance list or wait list if more applicants exist than seats available. After the completion of this process, one combined K-12 lottery will be held for all other applicants. At the conclusion of the lottery, the admissions list and wait list will be completed.
